Good leadership in the Australian public service can be tricky and complex.
Whether it is dealing with bushfires, floods or the COVID-19 pandemic, the spotlight has been shining on our federal and state political leaders to take action and provide a clear way forward. Australians have been looking for reassurance and plans on how the nation will tackle the big challenges now and into the future.
What have we seen? What have we learned? How did we get here? What do our current leaders’ actions mean for the future of the public service?
The Mandarin’s senior journalist Melissa Coade is joined by Dr Don Russell. Don knows the public sector very well. Having served during the Hawke, Keating and Gillard eras, Don has extensive experience as a senior Australian public servant and administrator, offering a unique perspective on policy formulation and the political process. In the mid-90s he was Australia’s Ambassador to the United States and later went on to head Department of State Development under South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill’s government.
In his latest book, Leadership, Don unpacks the current state of political leadership and explains how opportunities to leave a legacy for a better Australia are there for the making.
