Canberra media monitoring shakeup as Sky News signs exclusive deal

Streem media monitoring platform signs deal with Sky News Australia

Streem has confirmed its status as the nation’s only comprehensive media monitoring service after securing exclusive rights to Sky News Australia.

The landmark agreement means that from September 1 Streem will be the only media monitoring organisation able to provide customers with Sky News content, including alerts, streaming, downloads and transcripts, as part of their media monitoring service.

Access to a comprehensive data set of print, online, TV, radio and social content is critical to government departments and their ministers looking to keep across issues within their portfolio.  The industry had moved slowly until Streem’s entry in 2017, when the company brought significant innovation including realtime news delivery.

Streem was co-founded by Elgar Welch, a former adviser in the prime minister’s office, who recognised that existing media monitoring services weren’t fast or smart enough to keep pace with the 24/7 news cycle.

Prior to Streem’s entry, customers had little choice. But Streem has rapidly grown its client base in the past four years, now servicing more than 25 federal government departments and agencies — including Prime Minister and Cabinet, Treasury, Finance, the Reserve Bank, ACCC and ATO — as well as hundreds of the country’s biggest corporations.

Streem has won more than 50% of federal contracts put up for tender in 2020 and 2021, based on dollar value.

The company has also successfully renewed every major federal government department customer on new multi-year agreements.

Welch said the new agreement with Sky News Australia confirmed Streem as the only comprehensive media monitoring service in Australia and underpinned the continuity of media access its customers enjoy.

“The choice is now very clear: if you want comprehensive access to Australian news content and an improved media monitoring service, come to Streem,” he said.

What Streem does

Streem enables media and communications teams to monitor, analyse and respond to news as it happens.

The platform and its 24/7 account management team deliver comprehensive media monitoring in realtime, providing print, online, TV, radio and social media content within minutes of it being published or going to air.

Mention Streams allow platform users to see print and online behind-the-paywall and stream TV and radio within minutes of publication or broadcast. The simple interface enables users to easily set up searches, while a 24/7, Australian-based account management team is on hand when assistance is required. Streem also has a large editorial team building curated daily summaries each day.

Streem also offers:

Daily Email Reports – Receive curated reports daily for distribution throughout your organisation, surfacing key print, online, TV and radio media in a single, branded email report. With your key stakeholders front and centre, Streem’s curated Daily Email Reports are built and distributed by a team of editors, applying the human touch and making informed decisions about the content that matters most to your organisation.

Social Media – Streem Social is the first social intelligence platform built for communications teams. It is a dedicated tool that delivers deep social listening, analysis and engagement tools across platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube and millions of blogs and forums. Combining Streem and Streem Social delivers media teams a holistic view of all their media coverage, in realtime and from a single platform.

Insights and Reporting – Access game-changing quantitative and qualitative analysis of your organisation’s media coverage. Streem’s Insights team incorporates both new and traditional ways of measuring media to deliver an analysis of sentiment, share of voice, message and topic salience, key themes and competitor analysis into a single monthly, quarterly or ad-hoc bespoke report for media teams and their senior stakeholders.

The Streem story

Streem was established by Welch and co-founder Antoine Sabourin in 2013 after Welch experienced first-hand the frustrations of waiting for long-delayed media ‘clippings’.

“The media cycle had sped up enormously in recent years, but monitoring services had failed to keep up,” Welch said.

“I saw firsthand how the news cycle was moving faster than decision makers could act.”

After three years of testing and development, Streem launched its full-service offering in 2017 with shareholders including former ACCC chair Graeme Samuel and Quantium data analytics executive Tony Davis.

Now, the company has grown to a team of more than 100 Australian-based staff, which Welch said was a testament to the response from clients.

“From day one we set out to be the media team’s operating system, enabling live access to content, tools to build reports and insights, distribute media and manage issues – all from a single platform.

“The feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and federal government benefits enormously from Streem’s next-level service offering.

“Our goal now is to be the number one media monitoring platform in the country, delivering customers comprehensive, realtime monitoring from the best platform available.”
