The federal government has recorded that just over 6 million Australians are now using its digital identity system to access online services.

Digital identity provider myGovID is similar to a 100-point ID check and can be used on a mobile to access online government services.

Employment, workforce, skills, small and family business minister Stuart Robert issued a joint statement with minister for superannuation, financial services and the digital economy Jane Hume announcing the milestone on Thursday.

“Australians are embracing digital identity as a better way to access government services,” Robert said.

“More opportunities for people to re-use their myGovID digital identity are becoming available online, such as applying for a tax file number, an online customer reference number as well as a unique student identifier.”

Robert said the voluntary digital identity scheme was a safe and secure method to prove a person’s identity and that it was entirely controlled by the individual citizen. The government’s strict security protocols included a number of safeguards to prevent personal information from being collected, profiled, used or sold for other purposes, such as direct marketing, he added.

“It is not unexpected Australians are seeking a safe, secure and convenient way to prove their identity online and myGovID is doing just that,” the minister said.

Senator Hume said that trusted identification systems were the key to growing Australia’s digital economy and that government had a responsibility to stay abreast of these changes.

“We know how important factors like control over personal information, privacy and security are for Australians,” Hume said.

“This is about going digital-first, and we’re making sure the system is built around Australians’ needs from the very start.”

From November 1 this year, eligible company directors have been able to apply for their free director identification number (or director ID) using their myGovID. More than 185,000 company directors have successfully applied for their unique identifier using the online platform to date.
