Government library staff invited to give feedback on professional pathways

Government library employees have been called to give feedback on a new framework to shape the future of Australia’s library and information profession (LIS).

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) said the final stage of the  consultation process will be overseen by Dr Gillian Hallam over February and March 2022, calling for final focus group participants to sign up

In a statement, ALIA and Professional Pathways board chair Vicki Edmunds said more than 600 individuals had already participated in the consultation.

“For this next stage I’d like to particularly encourage people from special, government and public libraries, and well as library technicians to come forward, as we know those are areas that are currently underrepresented in the consultation,” Edmunds said. 

“We are seeking participants to give feedback, input and insight. This is your chance to influence the future of the library and information profession, and we want to hear from you.”

The framework will be designed to guide current and new pathways into library and information services, and support the career-long learning and development needs of professionals in the field.

A technical report will be made available in February, and will include a collation of foundational evidence that the framework will draw on. 

ALIA director of policy and education Trish Hepworth said that the technical report highlighted the need to develop the framework working with library and information educators, employers, stakeholders and people across the sector.

“Our focus groups will ensure that the framework and the project at large align with current and emerging developments in the LIS field nationally and internationally,” Hepworth said.

“And that it resonates with similar initiatives in other professions, that it takes into account the evolving trends in professional learning and most importantly that it will work for people on the ground,” she added.
