No foreign interference has been found in Australia’s 2022 federal election by the Board of the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce.

Australian electoral commissioner Tom Rogers was provided with the advice from the taskforce.

“The Board has advised Taskforce agencies did not identify any foreign interference, or any other interference, that compromised the delivery of the 2022 federal election and would undermine the confidence of the Australian people in the results of the election,” Rogers said.

The Australian Election Commission published a factsheet on foreign interference, stating “foreign interference is about foreign powers seeking to secretly and improperly interfere in Australia’s society”.

Additionally, actions that intend to interrupt electoral processes are viewed as interference.

The factsheet continues to state foreign influence is viewed differently, as all governments including Australia’s seek to influence matters important to itself.

“The work of the Taskforce plays a vital role in protecting and preserving Australia’s electoral integrity and I am pleased to be able to share this advice with all Australians,” Rogers added.

A range of agencies are members of the taskforce and its board, those being: the Australian Election Commission, Department of Finance, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, Department of Home Affairs, Attorney-General’s Department, Australian Federal Police, Australian Signals Directorate, and Office of National Intelligence.

ASIO revealed earlier this year it had foiled a plan by a foreign power to interfere in an election, as previously reported in The Mandarin. It was not revealed which election the foreign power sought to interfere with.
