Jobwatch: lead ACMA through change; a spot of cricket; calling top lawyers

Park yourself in ACMA’s empty Chair

Fresh from a recent review, the Australian Communications and Media Authority has an “enhanced” governance structure that is meant to improve transparency and accountability, and the key role at the centre of it is vacant.

ACMA will look to its new chair for strategic leadership through a period of significant change, guided by the government’s response to the review’s recommendations.

The ACMA chair takes the lead in regulatory deliberations with the deputy chair — who will also be the CEO — and three other full-time members of the body, as well as any part-time members who can be drafted in as required. The CEO will do most of the daily operational management.

Fancy a spot of cricket (lobbying)?

Experience at the highest levels of government can open a lot of doors in the private sector, such as the gates of the Western Australian Cricket Association’s hallowed pitch in Perth, and the corporate headquarters that lies within.

The WACA, part of Cricket Australia, needs someone from a public sector background to take charge of its public policy and government relations activity, with a focus on building relationships with departments, ministerial officers and opposition spokespeople in the federal and WA governments.

The WACA’s public policy and government relations manager actually reports to Cricket Australia’s head of government relations and infrastructure, but is connected by “a dotted line” to the WACA CEO, according to the online listing. There’s only a week to go.

Commonwealth legal team seeks star player

The Australian Government Solicitor has an opening for a deputy general counsel, one of its most senior roles dealing with the most significant, sensitive and complex legal issues faced by the Commonwealth.

Applicants will need to make a persuasive case based on expertise in constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation, and in the development, implementation and administration of legislation.

The two deputies in the Office of General Counsel have a lot of autonomy but work under general direction from the chief counsel, who leads a team of about 75 lawyers in various locations. The OGC is the Commonwealth’s main legal adviser, represents it in constitutional litigation, and co-ordinates cases involving constitutional issues.

As “a senior professional leader and role model” the deputy will also take on responsibilities for “developing AGS legal expertise and capability, mentoring future AGS professional leaders and building strategic client relationships” and act as “a point of escalation” to resolve legal issues.

All very hush hush

An opportunity has opened up to join ASIO at SES Band 2 as a first assistant director-general, a couple of rungs from the top position.

The national security agency wants someone to lead one of its divisions — they don’t say which but there are some clues below — and provide “strategic leadership and direction” as a member of the senior executive.

ASIO needs a new SES member “who is able to operate at the highest levels within Government and whose track record demonstrates the abilities necessary to coordinate, manage and perform successfully across a wide range of corporate and operational related functions” — experience in the intelligence world is not mandatory.

It would help, of course, but the main thing is the ability to thrive in a “dynamic and high pressure environment” — which is probably an understatement for this role. It pays somewhere just north of $250K, according to the listing on APS Jobs.
