The National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) is an independent agency in the Commonwealth Health Portfolio serving the people of Australia by increasing accountability in the mental health system.
The NMHC works with agencies from all jurisdictions, including Commonwealth, State and Territory governments, other mental health commissions, consumers, carers, advisory bodies, universities and the non-government sector to provide a whole-of-life picture of mental health in Australia.
The agency operates under the strategic guidance of an Advisory Board which includes members with a wide range of expertise including academic and research skills, mental health and social services expertise, and importantly, lived experience.
As CEO, you will report to the Minister for Health and will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of the NMHC. This role will work very closely and transparently with the Advisory Board and will be guided by its strategic advice.
A key priority will be working with government and other key stakeholders to implement the Government’s mental health reform agenda and monitor progress of the Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan.
To be a strong contender for this important appointment, your first-class representational skills and ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, at a community through to a national level, will be complemented by a personal style that engenders trust and respect.
You will understand the significant contribution of the Advisory Board to the success of the NMHC and be prepared to work with members of the Board to improve Australia’s mental health and suicide prevention systems and to act as a catalyst for change to achieve those improvements.
You will understand how to run an agency and will have advanced skills in interpreting and harnessing a range of evidence to help ensure the mental health of all Australians. Importantly, you will have a strong record of people management and a commitment to creating a mentally healthy workplace.
