- PART-TIME REMUNERATED STATUTORY APPOINTMENT
- STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP FOCUS
- CANBERRA LOCATION
The ACT Electoral Commission is an independent statutory authority. Its primary function is to conduct elections and referendums for the ACT Legislative Assembly. It also provides electoral advice and services to a wide range of stakeholders; researches electoral matters; and promotes public awareness through education and information programs. The Commission comprises a Chairperson, the Electoral Commissioner and a Member, all of whom are Officers of the Legislative Assembly, reinforcing the Commission’s independence from executive government. The Commission provides strategic guidance and leadership to the Electoral Commissioner in the delivery of electoral services.
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly invites applications for the position of Chairperson. This is a part-time role requiring demonstrable and high-level senior leadership experience in a field relevant to the work of the Commission. A term appointment of up to five years is available.
The ACT Electoral Act 1992 sets out specific eligibility criteria for the appointment. The legislation also precludes the appointment of anyone who is or has been, at any time in the previous 10 years, a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, the Commonwealth Parliament or the legislature of a State or another Territory. A person who is or has been a member of a political party at any time in the last 5 years is also not eligible for appointment. Remuneration and other entitlements for the position are determined by the ACT Remuneration Tribunal.
