We are looking for experienced leaders to join the Australian Space Agency’s senior executive leadership team. These positions will play a pivotal role in creating a vibrant space industry in Australia.
The Australian Space Agency, headquartered in Adelaide, is a separately branded division of the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. Its purpose is to transform and grow a globally respected Australian space industry that lifts the broader economy, inspires and improves the lives of Australians – underpinned by strong international and national engagement.
Due to growth in the industry, the Australian Space Agency is looking to recruit two newly created SES Band one executives: General Manager, Office of the Space Regulator, and General Manager, Strategy and Industry Growth. The General Managers will form an essential part of the Agency’s Senior Executive Leadership team. The ideal candidates will have highly developed representational and negotiation skills, are experienced leaders who value and empower their teams, have excellent communication skills and are committed to the values of the Agency.
General Manager, Office of the Space Regulator (OSR) – Adelaide (Ref: 69213)
Leading the Office of Space Regulation Branch, the role has oversight of the regulatory and international obligations responsibilities, which includes overseeing the Agency’s responsibilities under the Space (Launches and Returns) Act 2018 (Act).
The Agency through the OSR administers the Act, which includes assessment of a range of space-related applications, such as domestic launches of rockets, launch facilities, high power rockets and launch of payloads (e.g., satellites) overseas. The OSR also engages with industry to ensure there is an understanding and compliance with the requirements of the Act, coordinates civil space regulatory activities across government, and has oversight of safety and risk of space access activities, with the aim to develop and sustain safe launch operations in Australia.
The successful applicant will be expected to have relevant engineering or technical qualifications, supplemented by space launch and/or relevant industry experience. A deep understanding of managing safety and risk in a regulatory environment is essential to the role.
General Manager, Strategy and Industry Growth – Adelaide or Canberra (Ref: 69214)
The General Manager, Strategy and Industry Growth plays a key strategic role in enabling the Agency’s purpose to transform and grow a globally respected Australian space industry. This position leads the teams responsible for the Agency’s policy development and coordination, industry growth facilitation, as well as supporting the operations of the Agency.
The General Manager will lead the development of advice to achieve the Australian Civil Space Strategy vision, consider how to grow the industry through investment and workforce development, and engage across government and international counterparts on space matters and development opportunities. They will develop mechanisms and strong industry relationships to support industry growth, inform policy development to remove market impediments and promote the best investment conditions for Australian space enterprises. They will also building partnerships, skills and training opportunities for the space sector and oversee the Agency’s ongoing input into Australian Governments, $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy.
The successful applicant is expected to have relevant experience in policy development and a practical understanding of the success factors required to scale businesses and deliver sector growth in high technology industries.
Both roles require the successful candidate to attain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance, and Australian Citizenship is a prerequisite.
