The Australian-American Fulbright Commission is one of more than 50 Fulbright Commissions servicing 155 countries. As an academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is committed to the freedom of expression of inquiry, the advancement of mutual understanding, and the promotion of international cooperation. Since its establishment as a not-for-profit organisation in 1949, the Commission has produced many distinguished Australian and American Fulbright Scholars. Its activities are funded primarily by the governments of Australia and the United States of America, with additional support from high-profile corporate, not-for-profit and public sector sponsors, as well as from individual donors. Bilateral exchanges; binational governance; joint decision-making; and public/private funding and partnerships are the Commission’s signature attributes.
Applications are invited for the position of the Commission’s Executive Director. Reporting to the Board, this high-profile role has responsibility for the Commission’s managerial leadership. While developing strategies to grow its scope and raise the profile of its scholarships, the Executive Director, with the support of a talented team of six, will represent the Commission; optimise governance and financial performance; build and strengthen stakeholder relationships and provider partnerships; and garner event and program sponsorship.
Experience at CEO or senior management level in a business; government agency; or non-profit organisation is required, together with outstanding interpersonal and representational skills. Demonstrable success in business development, marketing and profile-raising, including external communications and media management, will hallmark the successful candidate. A track record in fundraising, philanthropy or volunteer programs, or other not-for-profit activities, will be highly regarded, as will an understanding of research and/or academic environments. Relevant tertiary qualifications are expected.
