Professional Foundations Program

A twelve-month program for APS 5 to EL1 staff, Administrative Officer 5 to 7, and other state public sector equivalents who want to excel now and help build the public sector of the future.

Public sectors, governments and the private sector everywhere are grappling with the profound economic, social, geopolitical and technological changes underway across the globe. Australia’s public sector ranks amongst the best in the world, and a lot of good work is already underway.

One of the key drivers of future public sector success will be a cadre of public servants who are motivated, reflective, historically aware, cognisant of critical future trends and collaborative by default.  They will be equipped to identify, plan for and respond to future developments. Providing public sector professionals with focussed training and development throughout their career will be central to achieving these ideals along with maintaining their engagement and developing their intellectual capital.

This program aims to prepare higher-performing, early career public servants to excel in their current roles and lay the groundwork for the future by developing mindsets and skillsets, strengthening engagement, and encouraging a collaborative ethos in pursuit of the public sector’s higher purpose.

The program

The program provides personalised executive coaching, small group discussions with senior public sector leaders, leadership development teaching and activities, practice in the use of Agile, Human-Centred Design and Digital Mastery tools, a peer network, and an action agenda for your next steps to give you a strong foundation for your future capability and career development.

What is involved?

  • 10 x one day modules in Canberra spread over 12 months
  • five individual one hour executive coaching sessions
  • work styles and other personality assessments conducted online and debriefed during the modules and coaching sessions
  • a team project oversighted by an SES mentor
  • project presentations to a panel of senior current and former public sector leaders in the final module
