About the Australian Energy Regulator (AER)
The energy market is in transition and the AER’s work takes place in the context of significant technological, behavioural and systemic change. Our work places consumers at the heart of this transition, as we play our part in delivering a secure, reliable and affordable energy future for Australia. The AER works to make all Australian energy consumers better off, now and in the future by:
• regulating to ensure efficient investment in, operation and use of electricity networks and covered gas pipelines;
• enforcing the laws for the National Electricity Market, spot gas markets in southern and eastern Australia, and Retail law;
• monitoring and reporting on the conduct of energy market participants and the effectiveness of competition;
• working with government and market bodies on energy policy, emerging issues and regulatory strategies.
AER staff are employed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). For more information about the AER please go to www.aer.gov.au (link is external) or www.accc.gov.au (link is external) for more information about the ACCC.
The AER operates within a fast-changing market, which has in turn led to a significant expansion in the AER’s responsibilities and resources. As a result we are in the process of changing how we operate to best support us in achieving the vision set out in our Strategic Statement.
